What is Glasstone Studio?

December 16th, 2015 by Ron Branch

carvingcroppedAs a specialist in sandblasted glass my clientele are mainly other glass studios in the Portland Oregon and Vancouver Washington areas, but of course all inquiries are welcome. Email me about your project – if I can’t help you, I probably know who can. I am currently in product development mode. Good things are in the works…

Etched Glass

August 20th, 2014 by Ron Branch

Birch trees etched by Ron Branch For Rich Lamothe at Glass strategies in Portland OregonThese birch trees are an example of a style I am developing that is a combination of carving and shading. The idea is to have the design hold up in any lighting conditions.

Often the details of an etching which is just shading are only effective in front of a dark background. I’m trying to combat this by including carved elements in a strategically balanced way.

Memorial Stone

July 30th, 2011 by Ron Branch

Onsite sandblasting setupI’ve done several memorial stones lately. This one turned out particularly well, with the earthy tone of the stone, and the nice natural shape.

Painting Upright Glass

October 17th, 2010 by Ron Branch

adding color to an etched glass doorI’ve been putting color on sandblasted glass for a long time, but this was the first time I ever had to do it with the glass in the vertical. I wasn’t even sure it was possible, and did quite a bit of experimentation and then practice and preparation.

All went well and I managed to get a few pictures of the work in progress which took place in an uncommonly beautiful dentist office – Trust me, you have never seen a dentist office like Aadland Dental in Vancouver – absolutely stunning! It features stained glass windows by Chuck Franklin Glass Studio. (Click the image for a small slideshow).

On a completely unrelated note, some parts of the website are disjointed right now, especially for users of “internet explorer”… sorry about that. We are doing some re-organizing and adding a couple of new features. It should only take a few days hopefully to iron out the wrinkles. We want to make it clearer to people all the different things we do, and also to consolidate the different mediums into a more comprehensive form – so each one is now going to have its own page. The words you can see in the white box up in the header will be actual links when we’re all done.

Stained Glass

October 3rd, 2010 by Ron Branch

samples of stained glassThings are getting exciting in the studio regarding stained glass. As a specialist in glass etching I have been kept busy with that pretty much my entire career. On occasion over the years though I have been able to sneak over often enough to become a proficient stained glass craftsman. We’ve had an opportunity recently to significantly expand our art-glass inventory to the point where I can now (for the first time really) build some serious windows.

Click on the image to the left to see some examples of what I’m going to get to work with. Read more

Did you know what day this was?

March 14th, 2010 by Ron Branch

Pi symbol carved on rock

stone sandblasted with pi symbol

“Pi, Greek letter (π), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th. Pi = 3.1415926535…” – www.piday.org

I guess this is why my son baked a pie (was actually a quiche) and took it to school. We were also going to celebrate by watching the movie “Pi” (one of my favorites) but we ran out of time. I’ve always liked the Pi symbol – so much so, I once carved it onto a rock.

The Art Of … paint removal

March 7th, 2010 by Ron Branch

restoring potters wheelI always enjoy fixing up a fixer-upper. I knew I was going to love this old potters wheel once it got cleaned up. It’s quite a contraption. It has a lever that you push with your foot that turns the big heavy lower wheel. Once you get it going, it goes for a long time on its own.

This was todays project. Several hours of sandblasting off the old layers, and then some really cool Rustoleum spray I found that gives the finish a “hammered” look. (Click on the photo to see progress shots).

Pet Memorial

February 5th, 2010 by Ron Branch

pet memorial stoneI got a chance to do something in stone today. This was the fourth pet grave marker I’ve done in about a month.

I like working with stone so much that I think I will actively market this particular product as best I can to the Vancouver area. I’m not yet sure what the best way to do this would be. Probably brochures in pet stores or a small add in the paper? I like that it helps someone who is in pain. The marker is a physical and symbolic statement; it says, “you were important to me, and I’m never going to forget you”.
