A Quick Hello and Update

September 23rd, 2017 by Ron Branch

Sorry it’s been a while. I should have done this sooner, but just so visitors know – I’m not accepting commissions for now. Currently recovering from an injury. Progress on that is slow but steady. When I’m back to work I will give another update and Glasstone Studio will be back, reborn to reflect the many changes I’ve gone through in the last several years. Looking forward to the future version – better, stronger, faster!

What is Glasstone Studio?

December 16th, 2015 by Ron Branch

carvingcroppedAs a specialist in sandblasted glass my clientele are mainly other glass studios in the Portland Oregon and Vancouver Washington areas, but of course all inquiries are welcome. Email me about your project – if I can’t help you, I probably know who can. I am currently in product development mode. Good things are in the works…

Between Glass and Stone

May 16th, 2015 by Ron Branch

Relief carving by Ron Branch circa 1989Close up of relief carving by Ron Branch circa 1989. I’d like to do a series of these someday. This is a small piece of flagstone, approximately 8″ x 12″. It has hand crafted mounting hardware by Bill Branch (my Dad).

Between glass and stone I feel stone is the more forgiving medium to work with. As a material, float glass is predictable, as in there are no hidden surprises. As a transparent canvas it is unique, with its distinctly beautiful qualities, but there is no variance from piece to piece… and so it quickly becomes all about the etching. With stone however… Read More

Polished Edge-Work

May 13th, 2015 by Ron Branch

edgework Just made this sample for an upcoming job. It’s 3/8″ clear plate with what’s called a “chiseled edge”, or sometimes a “chipped edge”, or most often a “scalloped edge”.

There are special tools (not a chisel) designed specifically for this effect. I don’t have the special tool so here’s proof you don’t necessarily have to have it.

It’s important to finish the edge to the point it is 100% safe to touch. This of course means using your own hand to thoroughly test it when you think it’s finished.

Lebanon Library

May 12th, 2015 by Ron Branch

libraryinstall2 High on a lift with Chuck Franklin, installing his glass into the library in Lebanon Oregon in 2011.

It’s a great example of Chucks outstanding abilities in design. I’ll see if I can find a picture of the whole room – a beautiful color scheme, the abstract expression of a river, which flows in Chuck’s recognizable whimsical line work.

It was a big job, 135 feet of stained glass. The project was funded by donation as a memorial to Judith Anne Nichols. Here is a link to a nice write up about it by Alex Paul in the Albany Democrat-Herald .

Decorative Mirror

February 8th, 2015 by Ron Branch

MickMirrorRecently Micky and I took the time to try out one of her mirror designs and we are very happy with how it turned out.

She cut and hand beveled a piece of 1/4″ mirror, a clipped corner rectangle approximately 16″ x 12″.

We removed the silver around the oval shape, added in the pattern, mounted it with adhesive and our own handmade clips to a wood backing board, and secured hanger hardware to the wood backer. We will definitely make more of these.

Etching Clouds

November 30th, 2014 by Ron Branch

etched cloudsEtching clouds for some door panels.

What a challenge clouds can be… takes a bit of study, especially when going “free-hand”. Here’s a video of some of the practice involved.

Note: In photographing etchings I use a black background and lighting, but when etching glass for a client, first considerations are for where the glass will be installed. What will the real lighting be like? What will be on the other side of the glass. There are different ways to etch for different situations.
